Our Family Coffee Story | MAK Coffee

A Family Legacy Since the 1930s

My Family
Coffee Story

What began with my grandfather growing Arabica coffee in Bicumbi, Rwanda, has become a multigenerational commitment to exceptional coffee, responsible farming, and stronger communities across East Africa.

Three Generations

A legacy rooted in family, land, and purpose.

Our coffee story spans nearly a century. Each generation protected the knowledge of the one before it while finding new ways to improve coffee quality and support the farmers who make every harvest possible.

“It is a long legacy to embrace, protect, and be proud of.”

The 1930s

Where Our Story Began

My grandfather began growing Arabica coffee in Bicumbi, Rwanda. His work established the values that continue to guide us today: patience, care, respect for the land, and pride in every harvest.

1997–2008

My Father Continued the Legacy

When my grandfather retired in 1997, my father carried the family business forward. He continued his work until my grandfather passed away in 2008 in Mityana, Uganda.

2016–2020

A New Generation Took Responsibility

I took over the business after my father retired in 2016. Following his passing in 2020, I committed myself to honoring both my father and grandfather by bringing our coffee and our mission to a wider audience.

Artisanal Coffee from East Africa

Preserving our heritage while building a better future.

To honor the legacy of my late father and grandfather, I have taken our family coffee business to its next stage. Their work established more than a farm. It created a responsibility to protect coffee quality and improve the lives of small-scale farmers.

My father introduced fellow coffee farmers in Rwanda and Uganda to improved cultivation and processing techniques. His goal was to help them produce better coffee while earning a decent and sustainable income from their hard work.

I am continuing that mission by bringing raw, natural coffee beans from our farms and other local farmers to the United States. The coffee is then roasted, ground, packaged, and offered directly to valued consumers.

This approach helps farmers receive a fairer price while giving coffee drinkers access to carefully produced, flavorful East African coffee.

Better coffee should create better opportunities for the people who grow it.

Our Mission

To improve the standard of living of East African small-scale coffee farmers by helping them earn a better price after consumers have enjoyed their finest coffee.

Empowering farmers. Elevating coffee quality. Preserving a family legacy.
